New Officials - What is the process?

2024-07-25

Update: August 19
We are working on an additional clinic date: Sunday, September 22 for new and returning Level 1 officials.  Please reach out to Kyle for more details.

Here is the process for becoming an official for the first time:

1. Officials are registered through Hockey Alberta, not the local Minor Hockey Association.
2. Age - officials must be 13 years of age by December 31 of the calendar year to be eligible to officiate.
3. Requirements:
  • New officials must take the Hockey University training module (this is pre-training put on through Hockey Canada).
  • New officials also must take an in-person clinic.  Typically these run from 8 am - 5 pm and include an on-ice component
Here is some more information about becoming registered.
4. Registration
Hockey Officials clinics are held in the fall and are put on through Hockey Alberta.  The clinic schedule is now posted.  The clinic schedule is posted on the Hockey Alberta website:
https://officials.hockeyalberta.ca/register/clinics/
You should try to get into your local clinic.  There are others in the Edmonton area, however you will be asked for the local Referee-in-Chief's permission before attending.  The Sherwood Park/Strathcona clinic will be held on September 21 this year - so if you wish to attend here (probably the easiest) - then reach out to Kyle.  If this date does not work, then pursue the other options around Sherwood Park/Strathcona.

5. Contact
Please reach out to our clinic coordinator, Kyle Edwards for more information regarding clinics.  His email is: edwardsk24@mymacewan.ca
